The Story

Hello, I’m Alice. I live in the Barossa Valley with my husband Matchy and our two children, and I am the person behind Bright Threads.

Some of my earliest memories are of my parents’ dinner parties in the 80's - they don't do dinner parties quite like that any longer unfortunately. Mum would be in the kitchen, Dad would be choosing bottles from the cellar, and the voices would carry on well into the night. The next morning, I would go looking for the After Eight mints left on the table. Finding one felt like a small reward for having missed the party.

I have loved gathering people around a table ever since. I love the food and the wine, obviously, but I also love what happens when nobody is watching the clock. Bright Threads grew out of that feeling, and a search for table linen with more colour and personality than I could find anywhere else.

The idea first came to me while Matchy and I were planning our wedding. Years later, on maternity leave with Skye, I decided to do something about it. My brother Hugh and I went to Bali to find people who could help make the linen I had in my head. That trip was the beginning of Bright Threads. I still work with some of the people we met then.

Today, I design the collections in South Australia, and our linen is printed and sewn by the people I work with in Indonesia. I make pieces to be used often, mixed with what you already own and brought out again and again. You don’t need a perfectly matched set or a special occasion. A tablecloth can change the mood of an ordinary lunch just as easily as it can dress a party.

I also want to make good use of the fabric we have. Offcuts become pieces in our Passion Project, and pieces with small imperfections have a place in I’m Not Perfect. There’s too much work in making beautiful linen to let useful fabric go to waste.

Bright Threads has changed over the years. I had a shop in Tanunda for a while; now I sell online and work with wholesale stockists. Closing the shop gave me more room to design, spend time with our makers and take people to Bali to meet them.

In 2026, I hosted my first Bright Threads textile retreat in Sanur. Sixteen guests came with me to see the printing process, explore the fabric shops and markets I love, meet the people behind the work and have garments made from fabrics they chose themselves. It was a chance to share a side of Bali that has been part of my life and this business for years. I enjoyed it so much that I’m doing it again, with retreats planned for May and October 2027.
